O projeto SKA tem sido um processo contínuo por muitos anos, com estudos de concepção de instituições que alimentam todos participando de fazer a SKA um instrumento verdadeiramente excepcional. A Organização SKA primeiro emitiu um documento de Base projeto no início de 2013 e, em seguida, uma Solicitação de Propostas em meados de março de 2013, convidando organizações de investigação e indústria para participar nos trabalhos para um projeto final detalhado do telescópio SKA.
Como foi dito na época, o objetivo das atividades de projeto é preparar o projecto SKA a nível elemento para prosseguir com a construção da primeira fase do telescópio SKA (SKA1). Consórcios, reunindo especialistas de todo o mundo têm sido formadas para supervisionar e trabalhar esses “pacotes de trabalho” e da Organização SKA já comprometido com uma ampla gama de industrial, engenharia e organizações científicas de todo o mundo, que irá cobrir todas as os componentes necessários para efectuar o SKA uma realidade.
